The older sibling of Manhattan stands in a market surrounded by new breweries and cheap drinking options, but passes the test of a true blue pub running full even on weekdays and lean hours. Besides the fact that Downtown is a very capable New York loving microbrewery, it delivers a loud and bonhomie-filled vibe. Finding a table isn’t always easy, so either reserve one or be ready to stand at the bar while you wait. Their in-house brews are available as a tasting platter, should this be your first time, but the low calorie and easy-to-drink Wheat Beer is the most popular. It has a pleasant aftertaste, while the Dark is wonderfully malty and pairs great with one of the thin crust pizzas. We love their by-the-slice rectangular options that are easy to eat and enable us to order multiple options. Of these, the Pepperoni would be our pick because pork + beer = a very happy girl. In case you don’t/won’t/can’t drink beer — though we wonder why not — they have a full service bar menu along with decent cocktails such as the Voodoo Passion (fresh pomegranate, cranberry, cinnamon vodka) that passes muster but is a little weak for our liking. The music switches between rock and retro with giant screens projecting music videos alongside gaming stations. Go here in a big group of colleagues or friends — either way, you are guaranteed to end up seeing the world through beer tinted glasses!
