Preview: Coffee Newbies

We belong to the “coffee is always a good idea” tribe and if you do too, then this news will get you super kicked! Just as winter comes knocking, we’ve got two brand new caffeine-centric spots that have launched in the last week, and since lingering over tall cuppas with something sweet on the side is how we love to spend our idle evenings and weekend afternoons, we did just that. Here’s your first whiff. The Coffee Bond, Uday Park We’ve been ogling at their Instagram updates for weeks now and the cosy café deserves all that attention. Opened last Sunday, TCB is run by three boys who were inspired by the fabulous coffee culture in Melbourne and now want to up the ante of Delhi’s bean scene. Though there’s still time before they go full steam, right now this tiny set up is serving a small menu of select roasts, organic tea and healthy cookies. After a particularly traffic-ridden drive back from work last night, we tried their Café Latte (Rs 95) and a pot of Rose, Chamomile and Lavender Tea (Rs 115) to warm us up, Creamy and rich, the coffee got us hooked with its strong flavour and sweet aroma. The tea, on the other hand, was fragrant and soothing – just what the weather demanded. No long queues, just warm helpful staff and baristas who will help you pick your beverage at this cafe that is trying to be paperless i.e. no bills. We love the eco friendly vibe and the no frills space. We’ll be going back soon and by that time, they will have a full stock of baked and savoury goodies. A stepping stone for bespoke coffee with a personalised experience, walk into this small space for some peace and quiet. Blue Tokai Roasterie, Saidulajab We are finicky about our coffee and we love it when someone wants to brew us something fresh! Equipped with a rotating selection of coffees, this new roasterie by the good folks at Blue Tokai is going to be open all through the week from 10am to 6pm. A mecca for roast-nuts and not to be confused with your neighbourhood coffee shop, go here to watch how your coffee is roasted and to get help choosing between Flat Whites or Cortados. They have coffee to-go available if you like things simple and they can also set up a freshly brewed coffee delivery service if you have an office near Saidulajab. Although the space officially opens on November 16th, they are inviting people to drop by to experience the entire process amidst the “orderly chaos” that comes with setting up a new place. We hear the plan is to add food paired with their fabulous brews soon, so watch this space for more!

Noida Diaries: Third Edition

Considering some of the country’s best and biggest media houses operate from Noida, the lack of great standalones and quick delivery options surprises us every time we’re planning a team lunch. Thankfully, over the last few months, things have changed and after a heartening second edition, we are back with another round of new launches and upcoming options in this quickly growing suburb. Our Story Bistro Tearoom, Sector 18 A cute little spot spread across two floors with a small outdoor seating, Our Story is the brainchild of 3 sisters. With earthy décor, a few handmade paintings splashed all around and bright layout – the warm and quirky eatery makes for the perfect spot on a winter afternoon for a cuppa with friends. The menu sees a mix of variety from India, Italy, Thailand and China with the Masala Cutting Chai (Rs 115) that serves 2 people along with Chilli Poppers (Rs 175) being a great combination. While those wanting something warm can try their Minestrone Soup (Rs 195), the kitchen needs to work on the food – none of which particularly stood out. But with a dedicated corner for bookworms and attentive service, this newbie can be a good pit stop before a meal, until the menu gets better. Price: Rs1,000 for two Timings: 11am to 11pm The Flaming Kick – TFK, Sector 18 This newly launched resto-bar has one of the biggest lounge areas with plush interiors and a private dining room adorned with leather furniture. The kitchen churns out global flavours from traditional Indian to Mexican and even Italian alongside Thai. On the other hand, the bar sees flaming cocktails and concoctions such as the TFK signature (Rs 799) – their twist on a Mojito with white rum, brown sugar crackles, lime, mint and chilli. If you are more into bubbly drinks, their collection boasts of Champagne magnums and the finest wine. Price: Rs1,500 for two Timings: 1pm to 11pm Gravity Mantra, Sector 18 A bar with live music and a picturesque terrace are this fusion spot’s biggest USP’s. Pegged as a party hub where you can unwind over a wide selection of mocktails and cocktails, its mall location means parking will not be a problem. The grub includes favourites from Italian, Continental and North Indian such as The Hearty Nooodle Broth (Rs 200), Kurkuri Bhindi Chaat (Rs 225), Vegetable Pepper Tempura (Rs 275) and more. Price: Rs 1,500 for two Timings: 1pm to 11pm OPENING SOON Chaayos The tea café chain is all set to open their 3rd outlet in Noida at The Great India Place mall in about a month. Since this is where the brand started out from, we are excited to see what they have in-store. DELIVERY OPTIONS Haochi Serving authentic Chinese food across the suburb, this delivery only venture dishes out hearty fare such as Hakka Winglet (Rs 250), Steam Dragon Rolls (Rs 170), Lamb Dim Sum (Rs 200), Chung King Fish (Rs 250). The portion size is decently large and they also have meal plans available for regular customers. Price: Rs 500 for two Timings: 11am to 11 pm To order, call 8800642573/ 8800642576 FRSH Meals in office canteens tend to get a tad boring, which is why we were ecstatic when we heard this Gurgaon startup is expanding to Noida. Known for their healthy and economical options of sandwiches, salads and beverages that come with calorie content, FRSH is a godsent for days you’re abstaining from junk food. The light Gourmet Fruits and Nuts Salad (Rs 222) comes with a yoghurt dip, while the Veg Extravaganza Sandwich (Rs 160) and Paneer Tikka Hummus Sandwich (Rs 160) are both wholesome but need some more flavour punch. We rely on their kitchen in Gurgaon pretty heavily, so are hoping the meh order was just a case of first week jitters. Price: Rs 600 for two Timings: 10am to 10 pm To order, click here

Our Story - Bistro Tea Room

A home away from home in Noida Sector 18. ATMOSPHERICS Sector 18, for all those who have not visited, has rather little in the form of food and beverage. It has too few restaurants serving  western food. Though there are Indian restaurants and plenty of faceless chains, there are not enough cafes. Our Story is set to change that. Owned by three sisters, it has the perfect proportion of homely charm and professional décor and menu engineering. Too much of one and you lose out on customers who want neutral service; too professional and you have become another faceless outlet. The menu is on two floors: first and second. There is no lift. The owners have always been around on my visits but they don’t come forward to chat. The décor is utterly charming as most woman-owned places are. The service is a bit in your face, but that is probably the norm in Noida.  TABLE TALK The food is of the soul food variety. Aloo Tikki Chaat (Rs 195)  and Grilled Fish Fingers with Garlic Aïoli (Rs 325) are starters that warm the soul. Oven Baked Meatballs (Rs 345) and Masala Keema Scotch Eggs (Rs 345) are novel and filling. I was amused to note the presence of Bunny Chow (Rs 245/275 veg/non-veg) on the sandwich menu. Technically, I suppose it would classify as a sandwich, having as it does a half loaf of bread filled with well-seasoned mince inside. It is far more hearty than a regular sandwich and don’t miss ladling on the chopped onions and coriander leaves that are served on the side. The best dish on the menu is a meal in a plate: Mutton Pepper Fry with Lemon Rice (Rs 375). It is precisely because it such a off-kilter combination, of the type you may encounter at your aunt’s house, that it works. Standard combos are served in every fast food joint in  town! PLUS AND MINUS The cheerful décor will lift up your spirits immediately. The coffees are interesting and worth a try, as are the desserts. However, there needs to be more vegetarian options.  Must Try: Mutton Khichda, Chutney-filled Cottage Cheese Steak, Fried Chocolate Bar with Ice-Cream Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.

3 New Regional Eateries In Gurgaon

It’s impossible to be anywhere in the larger Gurgaon area and not be surrounded by the flurry of newly launched eateries. But at a time when sushi spots and sandwich shops are gaining popularity, the suburb is also doing its bit to preserve old school recipes with regional options. Serving everything from fluffy appams to hearty biryanis, here are the 3 more recent additions. Coastal Reef, Baani Square The speed at which eateries are opening in Baani Square is astounding. From a neighbourhood haunt to a burgeoning food square, this area is home to both hole-in-the-walls and chains like Big Wong. It’s also good testing ground for newer ideas, which is why Coastal Reef makes sense here. Assembling a much needed dose of homely dishes from the major coasts of India – they traverse through Mangalore, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Malabar, Andhra, Bengal, Pondicherry and even Goa. The décor itself is warm with a brightly lit space that is non-traditional and hence, a little disorienting considering the food being served, but all that is an afterthought once your order arrives. The menu is extensive with seafood as a must try and samplers that are a good way to start. We highly recommend the Prawn Mappas (Rs 475) – a cocunut heavy Kerala specialty that is fragrant and addictive, as well as the chef suggested Chicken Milagu Varuval (Rs 275) – a fiery and peppery Chettinad dish. If you’re an Appam (Rs 45) fan, like us, the Prawn Stew (Rs 495) makes for a delicious pairing. It tasted fresh and just like it should, though our herbivore friends weren’t impressed with their vegetarian variant. We also mopped up the Nilgiri Mutton (Rs 475) with Malabar Parotta (Rs 55), but whatever you do, don’t leave without trying their Simmakkal Kari Dosa (Rs 195-275). The mutton and chicken versions are too good to pass on, and are meant for winter evening cravings. Call 0124-4272650 for delivery Orangezeb, MG Road More of a takeout and delivery spot than a sit-down space, the curiously named Orangezeb is a wholesome biryani spot in the otherwise boring DLF City Court. They claim to have hired khansaamas from Hyderabad, Telangana and Marathwada who’ve concocted a menu that includes curries and kebabs. We’d suggest keeping your focus firmly on their biryani, although the Chicken Nizami (Rs 250) we sampled as part of our meal combo wasn’t half bad and there are promising dishes like Palak Mutton (Rs 250) and Chicken Korma (Rs 225) in the mains. Hyderbadi is their forte, so both the Chicken/Mutton Hyderabadi Biryani (Rs 225-275) were aromatic, spicy and satiating. The rice is cooked well and the meat is juicy as well as generously layered. This is one of the better versions we’ve eaten in the city, and at a price that is serious value for money! In case you prefer something lighter, the Egg Biryani (Rs 200) also comes with two whole boiled eggs and a non-greasy light flavour. Go for their Value Meals for 2 or 4 that start at Rs 499 and can feed 3 to 5 people easily. Call 0124-4242600 for delivery Motuu’s Qila, Baani Square Another gem tucked away in Baani Square, this one is a few months old. Serving up Sindhi, yes Sindhi, food – Motuu’s is styled like a posh dhaba that is always busy, noisy and packed. In fact, their success has encouraged the family who runs the joint to expand into a mini-empire with more outlets in the area serving Mumbaiya-style biryani, street food and quick bites. The original is the best of the lot though, especially since Sindhi dishes are hard to come by. The accent is on homestyle fare, so expect sleep-inducing goodies like koki and sanna pakora. We sampled the Dal Pakwaan (Rs 230) along with Sai Bhaji and Bhuga Chawal (Rs 300) as well as a Non-Veg Thali (Rs 475). Our dining companion for the evening was a true blue Sindhi with a mother who cooks like a pro, so while we enjoyed the first two dishes, he did not think they were as authentic as they could be although it made him nostalgic. The thali came with Foto Bhuno Chicken and Egg Curry. The chicken was oilier than expected, but the egg curry was brilliant and made us want seconds. This is the kind of food your friendly aunty would make, so don’t go expecting gourmet and instead get your fill of some comforting treats. Next up, we’ll be going back for their Sindhi Kadhi and Chawal (Rs 350) Call 098998 59958 for delivery

Rajasthan’s hippie land, Pushkar, is once again all set for the annual camel fair that attracts thousands of visitors from all parts of the world year after year. Around 145 km from Jaipur and 14 km from Ajmer, this culturally vibrant town is the venue for the annual Pushkar Camel Fair held on the day of Kartik Purnima (full moon).  This year, it’s a week-long affair from November 18th to 25th. The sleepy town springs to life during the fair; it’s a riot of colours replete with traditional melas.  A carnival of art and culture, this is where you get to witness the age-old tradition of selling and buying cattle. Apart from the livestock trading event, which is the focal point of the fair, you can also check out cultural and musical events, go on camel safari tours and interact or even stay with locals. HIGHLIGHTS This year, expect a range of fun activities including a Mandna Competition (local art form), a football match (locals v/s visitors) and a Deepadan on the evening of the first day. The festival will also feature a traditional Satolia match ( local sport) between the locals and visitors,  horse dance competition, turban tying competition, moustache competition, Indian bride  and groom competition (for foreigners) by Rajasthan Tourism and a Matka race (water pot race for women) among others. The fair ends with a Maha Aarti and temple dance. The camels are decked up in bright colours by the owners; known as Gorband, these decorations help grab the attention of prospective buyers. FOOD The fair is also a great opportunity to dig into delectable dal baati or sugary churma and missi roti. While only vegetarian dishes are available here, the food here is authentic and full of flavour. The locals makes sure all dishes are cooked in pure ghee.  STAY While the town has plenty of stay options for tourists, we suggest you check out the desert camps. You can choose from a number of Swiss cottage camps that serve meals and offer personalised services. For full schedule click here.

If you’ve seen Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort in Wolf of Wall Street, you might have imagined that all stock brokers lead a thrilling life. While that’s not entirely true, bars inspired by that format are certainly exciting our wallets, and bringing a slice of the exchange to Delhi is this new café and bar that opens over the next weekend. Here’s an exclusive sneak peek. AMBIENCE A tiny set of stairs in the Outer Circle lead you to this mammoth space with muted wooden giant tables and TV screens. Walk around the 130-seater and you spot a map of CP, another wall with murals depicting a day at the exchange, a C-shaped bar right opposite a grand DJ console and an open space that is a seating area by day and dance floor by night. There’s also a VIP area for private parties. Café Dalal Street is certainly not cliched and you can soon expect Latino nights with dance lessons where you can pick up a move or two. FOOD + DRINKS The drinks are put together as chips – some go up on the exchange where prices will fluctuate and the premium ones are added as blue chips i.e. their prices remain the same. So you get a – Jack Daniels Silver Select (Rs 395), Glenfiddich 18 (Rs 695) and Belvedere (Rs 245). Besides this, there’s a large drinks menu with several signatures and a bartender who’s going to fix you any drink the way you like it. We loved the vodka-based The Wolf Punch (Rs 395) which has a fruity mix of apple vinegar, orange, strawberry and clove and Invested (Rs 395) with gin, berries and cardamom. If you like a drink that is strong and kickass then ask for a Sour Transaction (Rs 495) that#39;s got bourbon and cinnamon. At first, the food menu seems to have a bit of everything, but a closer look tells you they’ve ensured all the bar food an average Joe wants with his drink – kebabs, pizzas, chicken wings, dumplings – is in there. The team has also kept smokers in mind and all snacks come in easy-to-carry trays, so you can easily move around the bar. Of the lot, we tried the Hara Bhara Kebab (Rs 225), Tandoori Bharva Mushroom (Rs 225) and Mutton Galouti (Rs 325). The kebabs were soft and full of flavour and the mushrooms had a wonderful tandoori aftertaste along with a secret filling, which made it our top snack. Next to arrive were crumb fried Jalapeno Poppers (Rs 165) with tangy salsa and Slow Fried Chicken (Rs 205). While the former was cheesy and comforting, the latter was just what we all need with our beer – juicy and greasy chicken. However, what knocked us out was their in-house special of Butter Chicken Gol Gappe (Rs 195). We know that may sound like an odd combo, but one has to eat it to believe it! We guarantee this one’s going to be ordered on all the tables. IN A NUTSHELL WH Verdict: A promising and unique bar cum café that has potential!
