Hangover Brewhouse Kitchen

Another new brewery in Gurgaon, this one from the house of Punjabi by Nature, comes with a distinctively North Indian feel. From the name to the menu and even the boozy quotes on the wall – everything screams Delhi. The décor is standard, but the service is below par. So you’ll need superhuman arm strength and a lot of waving around to get the server’s attention. Once they do look your way, quickly ask for whatever beers they have on tap, which usually include the Patiala Lager, House Ale and Brewmaster Special Wheat. The latter is perhaps the best option and is a well-rounded, German brew. With a litre mega mugs going for Rs 355, drinking with your crew is affordable. Not feeling hoppy? The bar is well-stocked and also does some potent Knock Out Shots including Golgappa Shots that PBN is famous for. Try the jaljeera and aam panna versions and chase down the heat with accompanying beer. The grub got us excited on first glance with desi burgers immediately standing out and we went with the Non-Veg Sliders expecting two serves each of galouti and chicken tikka, but the platter only came with two sliders in total. At Rs 395, that comes to an average of Rs 197 per piece, which even our healthier wallet size found hard to swallow. The flavours and textures though were spot on, which made us crave for another helping even more, but you might be better off picking a Wendy’s on your way out. The rest of the menu is a potpourri of popular dishes. When it comes to the soundtrack for all this drinking, they have a different genre playlist for each day of the week and Wednesday is Ladies Night.

Impromptu

Hands down one of the prettier venues in the concrete suburb, Impromptu’s glasshouse seating is the stuff epic dates are made of! Think outdoor seating with cosy wooden benches, quaint lantern lights, a green cover and a vantage view of the inside through white curtained ceiling to floor windows. The indoors is pretty fun too, but tends to get a bit loud courtesy post-office crowds and big group parties, both of which seem to be a staple here on any given day. That steady inflow of people, along with their reserve happy hours, is the reason why getting reservations is a tough task. In terms of the menu, the bar and kitchen are on equal footing. While there’s a long list of dark and white spirits as well as beer and wine to choose from, the signature twists are a good start off point. We went with the Tropical Sangria and loved the addition of brandy, cinnamon and cloves that left a warm afterglow. Also interesting was the Watermelon Vodka Spritzer, although you’ll be hard pressed to find fresh fruit in your drink during cooler months. The food menu is short and sweet with the likes of a decadent Scamorza on Toast that goes perfectly with a glass of vino or Chicken Wings in BBQ sauce that pair well with beer. As far as the music goes, they are pretty active with an in-house DJ and the likes of Salsa Bachata Mondays or Retro Fridays.

From browsing social media profiles during traffic jams, our go-to activity now is gazing longingly at delivery menus. Not because we are that hungry, but cos’ the jams in Gurgaon are getting longer by the day. So if you find yourself in the same state as us with no inclination to cook after a long drive home, the second edition of our delivery series will come to your rescue! MORNING HIT – THE BREAKFAST CLUB It’s not new but this small takeaway spot, with a name inspired from one of our fave retro movies, is very reliable. And that’s what we need when it comes to brekkie because we can’t function without a solid meal in the morning. Their kitchen opens at 6am and works till 1pm (for late risers) with a menu that has something for everyone. From desi flavours to global hits and even some weird cravings – it’ll take a full 10 minutes just to narrow down your choices. The website is easy to operate, although you can also call them or just pick up an order if you’re close by. We suggest starting with the greasy and perfect for hangover mornings Keema Pao (Rs 350-370). With an option of chicken or mutton, it#39;s served with buttered pao that will remind you of Mumbai. If keema is not your thing, there’s paranthas, poha and even chole bhature on offer. For more wholesome eats, go for the comfort-in-a-bowl Three Bears Porridge (Rs 150). Then there’s the giant Breakfast Burrito (Rs 380-410) stuffed with eggs, sausages, cheese and more – your best bet to stay fuelled till lunchtime. Or stick with their An Ode to the Earl of Sandwich in traditional as well as fresh new avatars of Classic Ham Cheese (Rs 380/410) or the Brekkiewich (Rs 410/440) that#39;s straight from meaty heaven! And if you want something sweet, the Breakfast Club Pancakes (Rs 250-280) topped with bananas should take care of that. The portion sizes are pretty generous and the packaging is spill-proof. Log on here or call 9015179442 to order GUILTFREE LUNCH – INNER CHEF From DIY meal kits to office deliveries – InnerChef has now launched their own app and also extended their reach from Gurgaon to South Delhi and even Noida. Partly run by the team behind Di Ghent, their offerings are always fresh, light and yummy. While they start deliveries in the morning with breakfast offerings of bagels and eggs, we always call them for a lunch fix. On the menu are paninis, salads and even full-fledged meals of pasta and grills. If you’re feeling peckish or can’t leave the desk to eat, go for their unique Combos (Rs 190-240). Each combines half a panini with a salad and a freshly pressed juice + mini cookie packet on the house. We’ve probably been through the entire list, but if you asked us to pick, we’d vote for the Veggie Sunrise that has tangy Thai Mango Salad with Spinach and Corn Panini or the Salmon Breezer with Som Tum Salad and Smoked Salmon Panini. Not only are they excellent value for money, they also won’t leave you feeling guilty. If you’d rather go the whole hog, then the Rosemary Chicken with Veggies (Rs 290) is succulent, while the Pesto Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes (Rs 220) is hearty Italian. The recently introduced dessert line has some winners too with a decadent Mudslide Pie Dessert In A Jar (Rs 200) and Yummy Scrummy Carrot Cake Rs 150). All this arrives in cheery and very distinctive packaging that smartly uses colours like red and blue, which are meant to make you hungrier! Log on here to order QUICK DINNER – MONTY’S CHICKEN WINGS New York style chicken wings for lunch? Yes, please! And also send a bib with that. Uncle Monty’s one dish menu is a sight for sore eyes and a balm for hungry stomachs. It’s simple – he dishes out oven baked wings in different flavours alongside various dipping sauces and a side of Ruby’s cold macaroni salad. The wings come with a heat meter that ranges from 1 (sweet) to 5 (suicidal) with 3 (adventurous) being the upper limit of our tolerance. Each flavour has a corresponding number, so you know what you’re getting yourself into. Operating as a small takeaway, they have a quick website and are also prompt on the phone. We started with a serving of Monty’s Signature available from 3 to 5, which has a dash of bhut jolokia chilli. A tribute to the original Buffalo Wings that are made for messy eating, these are one of the better renditions available this side of town. One bite and you’ll be hooked, while wondering why you didn#39;t have the foresight to stock up on beer. Every serving comes with 4 wings + 4 drumettes and the famous creamy macaroni salad made by Monty’s mom that helps counter the spice. Plus, they aren#39;t fried, which makes them healthier and seals in the juices, so with the Sri Lankan Dry Rub, you don’t even need a dipping sauce. Same for the Cream Cheese and Mushroom that tastes as good as it sounds. Each of these go for Rs 295 an order and if you’re not big on spice, the deputies section (Rs 275) is what you should stick with. From that, go for the Honey BBQ and be prepared to lick your fingers long after the meal is over! The runners are quick and and the packaging is neat with foil wrappers used to keep the wings hot. Log on here or call +91-7042911330 / 31 to order

Preview: Maharanis – Women of Royal India

Indian royalty has always been known for their charm and poise, but more often than not, we only hear tales of brave kings and their glorious armies. What about the princesses and Maharani’s though? The beautiful and intelligent women who took charge of courts and palaces while the husbands were away fighting battles deserve to be celebrated as well. So Tasveer and Sanskriti Museums have put together a photography exhibition at Sanskriti Museums Anandgram that does just that! Focussing on the Maharanis and other royal women of erstwhile princely India, it’s a part of Tasveer’s 10th anniversary celebrations. We got a sneak peak of the show and are all praises for it. The topic itself is unique and strong, so you can expect the same from the exhibits. There are about 69 works on display at the gallery along with the launch a book of the same name. A portfolio of 20 ready to mount works will also be available on sale at the venue or purchased online here.  Maharani – Royal Women of India includes images from the archives of the Museum of Art Photography along with items from the Victoria Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London besides the Amar Mahal Museum Library in Jammu. Getting a portrait made was a tradition that was followed for a long time with the royal artist capturing the splendour and spectacle of court life. Around 19th century, paintings were replaced by photographs as they were much more accurate. Most of the images on display now are very old and the photographers are unknown, but they are a window into a long lost world. Some of the known names include Shatrujit Singh, Khem Bhonsle and Martand Singh. With this exhibition, you#39;ll see royal women breaking through the clichés while accepting the modernisation that came with the British era. The one aspect that we couldn’t help notice was how each of them had their own sense of style with chiffon sarees and exquisite jewellery on full display. Among our favourites are Princess Indira Devi of Kapurthala (1930), Nawab Begum Sajida Sultan of Bhopal, the Begum of Pataudi (1940), Rajkumari Shrimati Tillotama Raje Bhonsle of Sawantwadi, and Rani Hemalata Raje Sahiba of Jind (1937). Of course, no mention of the ethereal royal women can be made without Maharani Gayatri Devi, who has several photos in this exhibit including one where she#39;s seen talking to villagers in her province (1962). Maharanis – Women of Royal India is on display from December 6th to Jaunary 7th at Sanskriti Museums Anandgram, MG Road.
