Weekend Getaways: Karauli

Rajasthan is high on every traveller’s radar considering the state has everything from rolling hills to endless expanse of desert, glorious forts to stunning palaces, and national parks to pretty lakes. However, if you’ve seen it all and want to go off the beaten track, Karauli is a stellar option where you can experience royalty the way it’s meant to be and get a whiff of life in a small non-touristy town. EXPERIENCE Equidistant from both Jaipur and Agra, this place is only a slight detour from the Golden Triangle covering Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. As you make your way past meandering roads and congested markets, you’ll find yourself in a dusty wind-swept town that is as vibrant as it is laidback. Karauli was founded in 1348 by Raja Arjun Pal, who belonged to the Yaduvanshi clan that traced its lineage to Lord Krishna. Some accounts suggest the princely state was established as early as 995 AD. That explains why this little town is steeped in history and legend. Plus, it’s a great base to explore other places such as Agra, Mathura, Bharatpur, Ranthambore and Fatehpur Sikri. THINGS TO DO City Palace This 14th century palace stands tall in the middle of the walled city. It looks simple enough at first sight, but looks can be deceptive. As you walk in, you begin to notice the intricate details – delicate lattice work, murals, carvings and the geometry of the building that plays on light and shadow with some genius ideas to cope with harsh summers as well as brutal winters. The palace has been tastefully restored by the royal family, and you can soak in the sweeping views of the town from the roof or say a quick prayer at the popular Madan Mohan ji shrine in the palace complex. There’s also a step well in the vicinity. Kaila Devi National Park About 20kms from Karauli is the Kaila Devi Sanctuary – a buffer zone of the Ranthambore National Park - where the stark landscape is punctuated by shrubs and rocks. You can sight deers, nilgai, hyena, jackals, porcupines and if you’re supremely lucky, even a tiger. Geographically, the place is quite stunning with arid slopes leading to pristine lakes and waterfalls, and opening out to the deepest gorges and ravines called khos. The Kaila Devi temple at the same location is thronged by devotees all year round. Chambal Best known for its dacoits and bandits, the Chambal region on the Madhya Pradesh border is about 35kms away. The pristine Chambal River forms a natural boundary between the 2 states, and you can spot mugger crocodiles in the seemingly tranquil waters, besides a few species of fresh water turtles, otters and birds such as cranes and storks. Timangarh Fort This fort is believed to have been built around 1100 AD and reconstructed more than a century later after being destroyed following an invasion by Mohammad Ghori. The temples in the fort complex are architectural gems in their own right. STAY Bhanwar Vilas Palace is the current residence of the royal family of Karauli and a large chunk of the palace is now a charming heritage hotel. The palace was built in the 1930s in a colonial style, keeping practicality and modern aesthetics in mind. With over 40 well-appointed rooms and suites, opening out into gardens and a central courtyard, each unit is uniquely designed with antique furniture and a lot of character. The friendly and hospitable family ensures that you are well taken care of, while the in-house chef whips up the most delicious Rajasthani and European fare. And after gorging on great food, you can take a stroll down the property past organic farms, a stable and an enviable collection of vintage cars. Room rates start at Rs 6,000 (double occupancy). Click here for more details. SHOP The winding lanes of the old town are lined with shops selling lacquer bangles but no puppets, turbans or mojris are thrust in your face by dealers since it’s clearly not tourist central. So you’re free to drop by and watch as skilled women melt lac to make bangles, and it would be a shame if you leave without gorging on dal kachoris and the local milk sweets slathered in ghee. Distance: 180 km from Jaipur (via NH 11), 308 km from Delhi (via Taj Expressway), 555 km from Chandigarh (via NH1) Nearest railhead: Hindaun (30 km away) Best time to visit: October to March

Uzzuri Deli Bar

Even in a new location with a revamped menu and rejigged name, Uzzuri continues to be underrated gem. A more casual avatar of its GK version, this one’s a deli that opens early enough for a hearty brekkie, but we prefer getting there on a weekend afternoon for some signature tipples. They take their bar quite seriously with the entire upper section devoted to the art of mixology. The deck seating has an open layout, so you can bask in the sun or revel in a nippy breeze with a lounge-like vibe. There’s also an element of discovery and history with Google map coordinates and old pictures of CP on the walls. Thankfully, not everything has changed and our favourite cocktails are still around. Foremost of these is the Vanilla Bellini, which is one of the main reasons we keep making the trek to Janpath. Served in an old school brass flute, this take on our preferred brunch drink is refreshingly uncomplicated with subtle notes of vanilla and comes in a generous serving. If you’re aiming for less giggly chick and more sassy lady, then the Sous Vide Infused Bourbon Toddy is the way to go. The fragrant bourbon soaked beauty comes with smoky spices and a splash of mandarin for a citrus hit. The potent Msisimuko is a heavy-duty tequila drink countered by peach and fresh plum, which looks as good as it tastes, but should be sipped on carefully. The music is peppy and non-intrusive, so you can enjoy a heady conversation. To go with all that booze, there are delicious bar bites like the Chipotle Chicken Drumsticks and Cottage Cheese Burger Shorties or just can ask one of the smart servers for recommendations.

Fork You Too

Nightlife Reveiw Gurgaon’s Leisure Valley market is quickly becoming a great spot for pub hopping with a number of microbreweries and resto-bars sprouting up next to each other. And this HKV import is one of the top new launches. With a more concise menu but a much larger space complete with industrial style design, giant fans on the bar wall and wooden embellishments – Fork You Too is full on fun! blueFROG inspired pod seating booths spell out F**K and add a sense of playfulness, but the menu deserves more attention. No Molecular Shots or Twisted Classics here, instead we get some overtly sweet vodka based Tiki Taka and confusing Forbidden Fruit. So we suggest you stick with a draught beer or spirit of your choice and save room for their signature burgers, which are the best part of getting drunk. Pick your favourites and go for the oddly named Multiple Burgasms (2-8 sliders). We love the Teriyaki Chicken and Juicy Lamb. The waiters seemed to be having a bad day when we visited, but we believe in second chances. True to tradition, Tuesdays is Ladies Nights here too while weekends are for commercial hits and there’s enough room for a makeshift dance floor if you wish to shake a leg. On other days, the playlist is loud and hummable.  Food Reveiw By Marryam H Reshii Your search for the juiciest burger patties ends here Atmospherics: Large, cavernous and somewhat lacking the hip industrial interiors of the Hauz Khas branch, this one is modelled on the burger houses of the US, albeit without the same charm. It’s easy to find, with plenty of parking in the neighbourhood: after all, it is in the ever popular Sector 29, the restaurant capital of Millennium City. Fork You Too is on the row that starts with Swagath. Let’s be clear about one thing. Food is its strong point. Not interiors. So, while we went on a burger binge, ordering half a dozen of them, each one came with different fries (plus points for that) but the same three sauces – mayo, mustard, ketchup (minus points for that). There’s hardly any natural light, and the severity of the bamboo walls is not mitigated by soft lighting. Diffused lighting would have made the food look vastly more appetizing. Table Talk: It is probably the best burger house in the NCR for a couple of reasons. Not being a foreign chain, Fork You Too has no brand standards, and no political correctness to adhere to. They can procure their supplies from the best source, bake their burger buns in-house and grill their patties in the manner they deem fit. The result is a patty that is an enormous 200 grams and with the fries and coleslaw, a single burger forms a full meal. The ramen burger (chicken/beef Rs 465/495) is a novel take on a now fashionable creation: inside the bun is a beef/chicken patty and ramen noodles. The noodles are what imparted their character to this particular burger. The Vietnam Beef Burger (Rs 495) had the same formula: the patty was subtly flavoured with South East Asian spices and juliennes of raw vegetables placed under the bun. The Chicken Chettinad burger (Rs 465) had a patty that was identifiably flavoured with Chettinad spices, that did not, however, overpower the appeal of an all-American burger. Each one of the burgers we sampled had juicy, succulent patties and buns that did not disintegrate. Tomato slices and onion rings were placed on the wooden platter separately, but not as part of the burger. Plus and minus: Mayo/sauce variously flavoured to suit each burger would be a welcome touch. Must Try: Mushroom Galouti Burger, Man vs Food, Pulled Chicken Tikka Burger Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them. Food: 4/5 | Service: 3.5/5 | Decor: 3/5
