Informal

Moving away from the HKV cluster, the last half of 2015 has seen a boom of launches and in around the central district of Delhi. This resurgence of the once cool CP has made us very happy. Informal, one of the recent additions by the team of Imperfecto, is spread over an area of 6000 sq. ft. Split between two floors, an open balcony and a wonderful terrace, this café cum club is massive to say the least. The intrigue and confusion starts setting in when you find a barbers shop at the entrance. Taking it for granted that you will enquire about this setup, the staff proceeds to seat you in the chair and make you down some free and very potent “barber shots”. You can recover from that experience as you make you way up to the rooftop. We suggest you pick from one of the rustic tables under fairy lights with green grass beneath your feet. The menu has everything from healthier grill options to regular pub grub with a focus on Spanish food. We settled for the Moroccan Platter and loved the hummus enough to ask for doubles, but the other dips were a let down. Speaking of let downs, the bar seemed to be having an off day. Of the 3 different cocktails we tried – Diggin Bourbon with coriander, maple and ginger, Candy Garden that came with vodka, peach liqueur, pineapple juice and red wine, and finally, Switched on Fire with wheat beer, dark rum, sprite and ginger ale – none had the goods to make us go back for a second sip. So we settled for a beer as an amateur band crooned old Hindi pop and Sufi numbers. Everything else – including the attentive service – is spot on here, but we wish they were less informal about their concoctions. Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.

Hybrid

Serial restaurateur Priyank Sukhija’s Hybrid started off with great ambition – a café where you can work from during the day, an eatery by sundown and a club by night. It’s not only the name that intrigued us though, but also the location that’s a little hard to find. Once you get there, the interiors add to the game. With a curious batman shadow figure made up of metallic and mechanic bits on one wall and entire windows made of massive raw metal clocks on the other side, we couldn#39;t really figure things out as we sunk down on the plush leather couches. The food menu is vast with offerings spanning pizzas, burgers, pastas and finger food. But the bar, even with molecular options of Nitro Orangtini and Citrus Cooler, sees more misses than hits. That’s because on two separate occasions, we were told that most cocktail options were unavailable, so we stuck with straight drinks on our third visit. If you’re health conscious, make up for all that guzzling with some healthy veggie topped Focaccia or Oat Crusted Tomato Risotto Balls – both of which are surprisingly good. The playlist doesn’t help the cause and lacks direction, which leads us to believe this place deserves more attention from upper management before it can do justice to its great location, huge space and fun menu. ADDA by Striker

The Striker family is an ever-growing one and after their casual rooftop brewery in Gurgaon took off, the team decided to bring the vibe to GK1’s N-Block Market, replacing Urban Pind that has since relocated to GK2. Adda is the grown up brother of the previous occupant with three floors thriving with energy. While the first two floors are spacious enough, it’s their terrace that we (and everyone else) seemed to prefer. Picture gray cemented walls, red brick flooring, an open bar and massive barrels used as tables – everything that makes it a fun hangout throughout the week. No fresh brews, unfortunately, but still plenty of beer with Bira 91 and Erdinger on tap. The cocktail menu is much more humble than that of Striker’s in Vasant Kunj, so don’t expect anything special and stick with your preferred poison. The kitchen cooks up a mix of global and Indian staples. We opted for their Tex-Mex Platter with plenty of deep fried delicious snacks that are great drinking buddies. Thursdays are Sufi nights and Saturdays see some very heavy and loud Bollywood hits. On either night, we suggest you get there early for a good spot, because this adda is seeing a lot of action. Cafe Illuminati

While navigating through Khan Market, one always chances upon a new place or a hidden gem that had been missed out on until now. That’s exactly how we spotted this rather illuminated new spot atop a boutique. From the moment we entered though, we found ourselves utterly confused. While the name hinted towards a bar with secrecy as its main theme – yes, we’ve read one too many Dan Brown novels – it was actually the candles lit all over that give it the name. We admit that the setting is quite peaceful for a bustling city. The crowd was a mix of middle aged, young and way-too-young to be out after dark, by which we actually mean babies. We couldn#39;t get in the mood for tipples with wailing kids around us, and their weak cocktails didn#39;t help much. Each of their concoctions has a mysterious name attached to it, so we give them points for trying. Like the Yellowbird is called Da Vinci Decoded – a white rum based drink with pineapple, oranges and fresh bananas. And the Raspberry Margarita is called Vittoria, but is a bit too sweet for second rounds. The rest of the menu is what we’ve come to expect from the new round of resto-bars, but the service is painfully slow and slightly lost on all accounts including taking orders, helping decode the menu and getting the bill. Food is supposed to be the saving grace, and while their Kashmiri options have found praise, our small bites of Iram Kebab were a bit dry, and the falafel failed to make an impact, although the hummus was superb.  Happy Hours: Noon-10pm (Monday-Thursday) Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.
