The tagline of this new kid on the block says it all – “Get Catty, Not Bitchy”. Junglee Billee is a unique boutique and café cum bar rolled into one space that can’t be typecast. Heralding a new kind of venue, it pegs itself as a stylised designer eatery with treasures on the rack as well as the plate.
AMBIENCE
Spread across three floors, everything you see here has been handpicked by designer Nida Mahmood. From the specially designed exquisite wallpapers inspired by the Art Nouveau movement to the mix and match furniture or the rare photographs of yesteryear’s Bollywood actresses that adorn the walls – this is one unpredictable place!
While the first two floors sees vintage décor elements like cameras, typewriters, binoculars, vintage fans giving the space a realm of fine dining look and feel, the third has an open dining space that can be reserved for private parties. And if a light fixture, a particular piece of cutlery or even a fun chair catches your eye, you can buy it since everything is up for sale. Nothing is OTT though and just pulls off quirk meets vintage.
FOOD + DRINKS
Once you sit down, the elegant cutlery and glassware will become your focal point, until the menu designed by Chef Sabyasachi Gorai lands on the table. The food offerings traverses street food gullies as much as it showcases global café signatures. Head Chef Pawan Bisht, who is also an ex-AD Singh prodigy, shows of his skill on every plate.
The nostalgia inducing fare also keeps the weather in mind, so we started with Alfresco Mushroom Soup with Thyme and Truffle Oil (Rs 320) that’s homely yet delicious. The appetisers come with interesting names like Pandu Vada Pav (Rs 280) and Surati Samosa (Rs 250) along with Stuffed Dal Ka Chilla (Rs 320). Carnivores will enjoy the Mohhamnad Ali Road’s Chicken Boti (Rs 480) as much as the Koliwada style Fish Tandoori (Rs 520). Or how about Iranian Berry Pulao (Rs 520) – rice topped with fried onions, nuts and dry berries – that is so blissful, it will induce Sunday-lunch at home kind of naps. Before you wrap up your meal, dig into some Bombay Mava Cake with Butter Frosting (Rs 330) and Grandma’s Apple Pie (Rs 250) to seal the deal.
There’s also a full service bar with curious concoctions like Junglee Piña Colada (Rs 445) with a dash of Tabasco or Jack Be Jamaican (Rs 450) that you can look forward to.
