Panna Bharat Ram Theatre Festival

Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts is hosting a week-long festival as part of which, acclaimed plays will be staged. The schedule is as follows: 26 December: Tughlaq This famous play by Girish Karnad deals with the mass displacement of the people of Daulatabad under the rule of Tughlaq. The play explores the repercussions of this displacement and also looks at the rigid and intolerant ruler as a person away from the public eye. 27 December: Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa Written by Mahasweta Devi, this play is the story of Dibyanath and Sujata, a middle-class married couple and their children. Their life is turned upside down when their youngest son Brati is killed because he is part of a militant group. 28 December: Agni Aur Barkha Written by Girish Karnad, this story draws on the incident in Mahabharata in which Paravasu, returning from a yagna, sees something moving in the forest and kills it believing that it is a wild animal. It later turns out to be his father. 29 Decemeber: Revised Kama Sutra The Revised KamaSutra revolves around the story of a young boy in search of love, sex and salvation. He ends up meeting interesting women on his way from Mumbai to Mangalore and then to Washington DC. These encounters spice up his life but also bring in ample amount of misadventures. 30 December: Godan Based on Munshi Premchand’s famous story, this play talks about caste and class inequalities in the Indian society through the character of Hari, a poor farmer and his interactions with those above him on the caste ladder. 31 December: To Be Or Not To Be (11 am) Does ambition lead to crime? A director is holding auditions for the staging of Macbeth and the actors are competing for the big roles. Their lies, deception and their ambition forms the basis of this play’s story. 31 December: The Mahabharata Of Women Three modern women interact with the female characters in Mahabharata like Draupadi and Kunti and try to find out more about their thoughts and feelings.  1 January: Tartuffe Orgon is a wealthy man who gets taken in by the devious Tartuffe, so much so that he signs over all his worldly possessions and his daughter to the latter. It is at this point that Orogon’s family devises a plan to trap Tartuffe and reveal his true intentions. Ticket prices: Rs 100 to 300 Tickets available on BookMyShow
