Rajasthan’s hippie land, Pushkar, is once again all set for the annual camel fair that attracts thousands of visitors from all parts of the world year after year. Around 145 km from Jaipur and 14 km from Ajmer, this culturally vibrant town is the venue for the annual Pushkar Camel Fair held on the day of Kartik Purnima (full moon). This year, it’s a week-long affair from November 18th to 25th. The sleepy town springs to life during the fair; it’s a riot of colours replete with traditional melas.
A carnival of art and culture, this is where you get to witness the age-old tradition of selling and buying cattle. Apart from the livestock trading event, which is the focal point of the fair, you can also check out cultural and musical events, go on camel safari tours and interact or even stay with locals.
HIGHLIGHTS
This year, expect a range of fun activities including a Mandna Competition (local art form), a football match (locals v/s visitors) and a Deepadan on the evening of the first day. The festival will also feature a traditional Satolia match ( local sport) between the locals and visitors, horse dance competition, turban tying competition, moustache competition, Indian bride and groom competition (for foreigners) by Rajasthan Tourism and a Matka race (water pot race for women) among others. The fair ends with a Maha Aarti and temple dance.
The camels are decked up in bright colours by the owners; known as Gorband, these decorations help grab the attention of prospective buyers.
FOOD
The fair is also a great opportunity to dig into delectable dal baati or sugary churma and missi roti. While only vegetarian dishes are available here, the food here is authentic and full of flavour. The locals makes sure all dishes are cooked in pure ghee.
STAY
While the town has plenty of stay options for tourists, we suggest you check out the desert camps. You can choose from a number of Swiss cottage camps that serve meals and offer personalised services.
