The past fortnight has given us multiple reasons to celebrate what India stands for and continuing with that feeling of country pride, we are celebrating art works from 12 genres representing the harmony within our diverse culture. A week-long show curated by renowned art historian Dr Alka Pande, Many Indias is an ode to Indigenous art through which the audience sees an inner India that is nuanced, complex and full of storytelling, narratives from popular culture, allegories and metaphors of our living heritage. Bringing tribal arts and artists of India to the forefront, this exhibition’s main motifs carry strong symbols from nature and were originally painted in vegetable dyes and natural pigments. Some of these tribal artworks use traditional techniques that include fast drying painting mediums like an egg yolk or gum. These techniques called tempera and gouache are simple yet ethnically rich.  The exhibit features exquisite forms of art from secluded communities like the Baiga of Madhya Pradesh, the indigenous tribal community of Bhil from Western Deccan regions and Central India, Gond and Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh, Kalighat style of paintings from Kolkata, Rogan from Kutch region, the Saura tribe art from Orissa, Warli from the coastal regions of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Patchitra from Bengal and Orissa, Picchvai art of Nathdwara, folk-ish visual idioms from Mithila in form of Madhubani and Sanjhi Art that locates its root in the Krishna cult practiced in the region of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Where: Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Centre When: August 26th to August 31st, 10 am to 8 pm Entry: Free
