Cocktails Dreams Speakeasy

We all have that one bar that we loving showing off to friends who aren’t in the know or those visiting from out of town, and for most people in G-town, Cocktails Dreams is that bar. A mecca of experimental libations and underground music, they even let you concoct your own drink! Co-owner and bar guru Yangdup Lama’s world of artisanal cocktails, comfort food and easy jazz in a hidden warehouse-like bar is our preferred watering hole. Inspired by the 1920s Prohibition era, this “speakeasy” is revered by regulars, who seem to have a sense of community with the staff and barkeeps. The décor is deceptively half-finished with gruff walls plastered with prints, open wires and assembly line seating spread over two floors. Descend the steps and you’ll find smiling bartenders who will help you choose your base and flavour preference and let you whip up something special. Or just go for the signatures, which come with their own coaster and some history/fact about the drink. We have fallen hard for the Bronx — a pre Prohibition drink with gin, dry and sweet vermouth and orange juice that always has us over-indulging, even as The Blackberry Bramble — their take on a 30s version of England’s Cosmopolitan with vodka and blueberry syrup, black grape juice and fresh lime — leaves us smiling like a kid in a candy store. The signature Foghorn (a tweaked recipe comprising of a tall Collins with vodka, gingerbread syrup, ginger juice, lime and dry gingerale) is also a big hit and one of the best examples of the nuanced mixology at work here. On most nights, you’ll find a live music ensemble at the mic and a cocktail special of the week. Grab a bar stool and watch your drink being made as you grease up for round two with some hearty grub of juicy pork and mutton Sliders, sinful Pigs in a Blanket and surprisingly textured Stuffed Mushroom Heads. Do yourself a favour and go check it out if you haven’t already – you’ll thank us! Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by What#39;s Hot.
