We still remember a friend holding her head the morning after Holi and, amid groans of pain, swearing never to touch bhang again. An aching and woozy head; nausea and stomach sickness; raspy tongue – these symptoms typical after any festival don#39;t have to spoil your next day anymore. Here are our time tested cures and simple tricks to take the edge off!
HAPPY TUMMY = HAPPY HEAD
Whether you consume bhang or overindulge in spirits, this idea works for both because when you partake on an empty stomach, it hits you more than it would on a full one. That doesn#39;t mean that you overeat though! Avoid oily, fried and heavy foods before you go on a binge, as these may worsen that hangover. Instead, choose carb heavy but light options.
HYDRATE
Dehydration is one of the main causes of a hangover, so it’s very important to keep yourself hydrated. Try and drink a few glasses of water in between sessions. And however high you may be, try and down at least three glasses of water before you hit the sack. The reason: water will begin to flush out your system and remove some of the intoxicants
In case you forget, lemon water and sports drinks help too. Vitamin C from the lemon along with antioxidants help in strengthening the senses. Also, sports drinks consist of vitamins that help alleviate muscle pain, which, in turn, help getting rid of hangovers. Another reason for drinking lots of water is that if you are dehydrated, the bhang may have a prolonged effect on you. Apart from these, you can also try fresh juices like sugarcane, pineapple and apple.
SAY NO TO CAFFEINE
Often people suggest having a cup of coffee to cure a hangover, but trust us on this and don’t do it! The intake of caffeine will only worsen that headache. Instead of coffee or regular tea, choose green tea or herbal tea with rose, jasmine or some other natural blend. They are devoid of caffeine and work better in countering the effects of alcohol and/or bhang.
EAT + DRINK THIS INSTEAD
You could simply go for the classic (and non alcoholic) hot toddy – honey, lemon and hot water. It replenishes fluids and sugars lost to a hangover. Honey has fructose, which helps boost metabolism by balancing the sugar level, and lemon replenishes vitamins.
Or try these weird but helpful options – eat potatoes with milk! Consuming hard drinks in large quantities can eliminate the body’s supply of potassium and calcium, and this unusual combination is an excellent source of these minerals.
