Some sartorial choices, like a well-cut suit, a saree and even denims, will never go out of style. As more and more of us are moving away from mass-manufactured products and looking out for something unique, these 5 homegrown brands are making their mark thanks to a streak of individuality.
Korra Jeans
Run by a team with decades of experience in the apparel market, Korra Jeans was initially conceptualised around the idea of sustainable clothing. Using raw denim and cotton from local producers and passing up factory line manufacturing, they hire local tailors to give each pair of denim a personalised touch. And to ensure the tailors have a sense of accountability as well as belonging, each pair of jeans is marked by their signature.
The range include jeans and jackets for both men and women in a variety of fits. If you are finicky about your cut (as you should be), they also offer customised options. Alternatively, check out their Try@Home service for a nominal price wherein a specialist will bring selected styles to your home that you can try out, with no obligation to buy. Korra also has a repair service called Care Plan to help customers hold onto their favourite pair of jeans longer.

It’s My Life Jeans Co.
Started in 2012 as a bespoke denim brand, they offer perfectly fitted jeans that are hard to say no to. The bespoke collection has a variety of styles from which you can pick one and then go for a custom fitting. A specialist will visit your home and take your measurements or alternatively you can visit one of their stores, post which the jeans are delivered within 2-3 weeks.
They also have a ready-to-wear line for women under the Indie Jeans collection, which is a mix of denim fabrics and desi handlooms such as ikkat and bandhani. Each piece is handmade and has a distinguishing feature like embellishments or printed seams. The prêt line for men will be launched soon.
We Love: Their leather-coated jeans – the best of both worlds!

11.11
Denim may have its origins in the working class history of America, but it is no longer only confined to the blue collars. Bringing the plebian fabric into the luxury space is 11.11 – a fashion label conceptualised by one Japanese and one Indian designer. The focus of their line is to create sustainable and ethical fashion by enrolling farmers, weavers, tailors and others involved in the making of a piece of clothing.
Their socially conscious message is most apparent in their 100% Reclaimed Line, which includes bags, iPad sleeves and clutches made from discarded material. Yet another range called 100% Handmade, for both men and women, combines khadi and denim in products that are handmade and signed by the artisan.
We Love: Their basic shirts, waistcoats, shawls and jackets in fabrics like khadi denim, kacchhi wool and chambray khadi cotton.
Cost: Rs 6,800 onwards
