This month, the city is in for a theatrical treat with the return of the annual Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards 2015. Now in its 11th year, a total of 10 productions in varied languages will be staged across three venues as part of the celebration. META has been recognising and rewarding multiple aspects of theatre production and stagecraft while providing a platform to promote varied elements like playwriting, set design, costume and light design, direction and performance for years. Powered by the Mahindra Group, this edition aims at spotlighting the year gone by and audiences get the gift of watching some brilliant theatre. There’s a total of 10 plays showing this year across 6 languages and various genres. Kaizaad Kotwal’s Agnes of God (March 9th) narrates the story of an apprentice nun who gives birth and insists that the child was the result of an immaculate conception. The title is a pun on the Latin phrase Agnus Dei meaning Lamb of God. Taking us on a whirlwind romance during troubled times in 1948’s Palestine is Mein Huun Yusuf Aur Ye Hai Mera Bhai (March 9th), while Kannad production Akshayambara (March 7th) is an experimental play that raises questions on female representation and male ownership in the Indian society. We recommend the ensemble piece on Iranian prisoner Reyhaneh Jabbari, who was convicted of a murder and later hung in 2014, called 07/07/07 (March 8th) that is a detailed account of her time in prison for killing her rapist. Hard-hitting drama, Kuhaimaravasigal (March 6th) – the Tamil word for Cave Tree Dwellers – opens up a new politics of no borders. Based on The Eleventh Planet by Evald Flisar, Bengali play Haoai (March 8th) is a theatrical metaphor that exposes the absurdity and crisis of living in a world sans dream and desire. In A Friend’s Story (March 10th) – an adaptation of Vijay Tendulkar’s Mitrachi Goshta – the 3 lead protagonists deal with sexuality and unconventional relationships in 1940s Pune. Then there’s the non-verbal musical, After Death – The Spiritual Journey (March 6th), which explores the ancestral beliefs of the Bhil tribe and its varying visual culture. Finally, inspired by French Playwright Jean Genet’s body of work, The Balcony (March 7th) intends to unveil state terrorism, fake revolutions, religious invasions and corrupted judiciary in the present contaminated world.
